As I usually work through lunch, I often just drop by a shop to get a quick bite. Many people here in Rome do the same especially this time of the year as they would rather spend a part of their lunch break walking around and enjoying the outdoors.
If you are by Piazza Navona or Campo dei Fiori and want a quick bite, step into Il Fornaio which is a bakery that offers you a wide-selection of baked goods from pizza to mouth-watering desserts. There are so many things which are good that makes it tough decision. Yesterday I just wanted a quick snack and decided on the suppli di riso which is a fried rice ball (rice flavored with tomato sauce and in the middle there is a piece of mozzarella. It is coated with bread crumbs and fried).
In addition, there are different types of panini (sandwiches) and the all-time favorite with Italians is the pizza bianca with mortadella (plain pizza with mortadella – a type of cold cut). If that isn’t enough, this shop is filled with all sorts of desserts from the Sicilian cannoli to a tarlet with ricotta with marron glaces.
Price-wise it is slightly a bit more expensive. To give you an idea, you could get a suppli for €1 at a regular pizza shop but at Il Fornaio it costs €1.20. Nonetheless, the prices are not outrageous and the food is good.
It’s difficult to walk out of this shop with just one thing but as I live in Rome I have the privilege of coming back again to try something else. If you are visiting and may not pass by this area again, get a few things to try and you won’t regret it.
