Good Restaurant in Rome: Porto Corallo

I have always considered this a good restaurant in Rome and often bring visiting guests here for dinner. Even though they mainly serve seafood, they have a nice variety.

The restaurant is located near San Giovanni in Laterano and is close to San Giovanni Metro A stop so quite easy to access by public transportation. Their address is:

It specializes in Sardinian food and the service as well as quality of food is decent.

A Good Restaurant in Rome With A Nice Touch

What I like about this place is when you are first seated, they offer you a glass of Prosecco which is a nice touch.

To start, we usually order the Gran Gala Appetizers when there are more than 4 of us, as the minimum order is for 2 people.

It is priced at 26euros for two which is very reasonable for a good restaurant in Rome.  In the Gala Appetizer, you will get a good serving of fried moscardini, salmon and octopus carpaccio, sauteed mussels, and octopus salad.

Pasta Dishes

For the pasta dishes (primi), my husband usually gets tagliolini (a type of pasta) with spigola (bass) and tomatoes. On the other hand, I would order tagliolini allo scoglio (pasta with mix seafood).

The pasta dishes start at 8euros which for Rome standards is a good price. This evening, as my brother-in-law was with us, he got the fregole with clams and bottarga (roe pouch of tuna or grey mullet, or sometimes swordfish).

Second Dishes

In Italy, this would be either a meat or seafood dish.  We just ordered the swordfish to share and it was cooked very nicely.

Although they are known for their seafood dishes, they also serve a very good Chateaubriand which comes with fries and grilled vegetables.

The minimum order is for two and the price listed is 35 euros.  The last time we ordered the Chateaubriand, we weren’t sure if it was 35 euros per person but when we got the bill, it was 35 euros total.  I am not sure if they made a mistake but for 35 euros in total it was worth it.

The serving size is huge and definitely more than enough to fill you up with a first dish.

We have never tried it but they also prepare maialino sardo al forno (roasted baby pig) but the minimum order is for 6 people.  The only reason we haven’t ordered it is because we’ve never had at least 6 people at dinner.

Desserts

They have a good selection of desserts and my sister-in-law was excited they had seadas on the menu.  Seadas is a Sardinian dessert which a pastry filled with cheese and then topped with honey. Yes, it sounds heavy but I wanted to try it.  However, it wasn’t available!

So my husband order the Gelato Zabaione Affogato al Cafe (Zabaione ice cream in coffee) which he said was very very good.  He is not a dessert person and if he says it is very good – it must be good!

The pannacotta and tiramisu were just ok.  Nothing spectacular.  We also order another dessert which is crumbles of puff pastry with chantilly cream.  I ordered this and again, it was just ok.

I think the only feedback for this good restaurant in Rome to become better is if they improved their desserts.

Why I think it’s a good restaurant in Rome

I like the service and though they may not be super friendly, they are efficient.  For what they offer, the price is very reasonable.

While they offered a Prosecco to start the dinner, they would also offer you a basket of Sardinian cookies and a choice of either Mirto or Limoncello or both after the meal.

That to me is more than what you would get in any good restaurant in Rome!

Tip: If they are just two of you, ordering the Gran Gala appetizer is enough to fill you up.
