Friends who live outside of Rome but within the Lazio region invited us to their country home for lunch this past weekend. As it is common courtesy here in Italy, we brought a simple Italian dessert which was suitable for this hot summer weather.
I always enjoy meeting up with them as they have a lovely piece of land with fig trees and over 100 olive trees.
It was a good excuse to get out of Rome too because it was really hot. What we heard from the news was that where we were going – near Frosinone – was as hot (if not hotter). It was sure hot when we got there but the slight breeze that they had made all the difference.
While most visitors to Italy focus on Tuscany and Umbria, I have to say that the Lazio region is as beautiful. Driving to our friends place, which is further south than Rome, you can easily see there are so many hidden towns and treasures yet to be discovered.
Lazio Region – Mozzarella di Bufala
If you haven’t known yet, you can get really good mozzarella di bufala in this Lazio region near Frosinone and Latina. On our way home, we decided to stop at a shop to pick up a mozzarella di bufala for dinner to accompany the gifts we received from our friends’ garden.
Stepping inside shops like this for me is heavenly. They had various types of cheeses and cold cuts that the problem is that you want to buy everything. We were here for the mozzarella di bufala but also ending up buying some scamorza and prosciutto.
Of course, we didn’t forget the mozzarella di bufala. This is how it mozzarella looks like.
With the tomatoes, figs and bottle of olive oil we received from our friend together with what we bought at the store, we had a delicious dinner.
Simple but heaven for the taste buds.
Experience the Lazio region
While I ventured to the southern part of Lazio this weekend, there is a lot of see and do in this region. Even if it is just for a few days, step out of the city and immerse yourself in the beautiful countryside. You won’t regret it.
Not sure where to go?
Recently, I discovered this bed and breakfast “Flavor of Italy” in Lazio. I haven’t been there yet but it looks very appealing. They require a minimum 2 nights stay but as there are also cooking courses available, you will probably want to stay longer.
I have to agree with Wendy, owner of Flavor of Italy, that Lazio is the new Tuscany!
If you have explored the Lazio region, what other places to do recommend? Please share your experience in the comment section below.
P.S. If you are interested, also check out Casperia, this mediaval town in the Lazio region.
Italy is one of my itinerary place to go. My friend always send me picture on his trekking adventure in Italy. I love nature and you got the best sites to visit.
Hope you get the chance to visit! There are so many regions to explore and each one has something special to offer.
I’ve spent sometime in Altipiani di Arcinazzo which is in the mountains near Fiuggi and Frosinone. Not much going on but a nice place to relax and unwind. I would also suggest the new app Rome Side Trips. The authors have done a great job of assembling suggestions for daytrips an hour or so outside of Rome.
With the hustle and bustle of life in Rome, I always enjoy getting away and finding a place where you can just completely unwind. Thanks for sharing the information about the Rome Side Trips app – I think those who are visitors to Rome would benefit from going out of the city!
Thank you for this blog. The best I have run across on the web. Looking foward to diving in to plan my first trip to the region in September. Keep up the great writing!
Thank you and hope you have a wonderful visit to Lazio.
