Spring in Rome
“Pasquetta” when literally translated into English means ‘Small Easter”. It is the holiday after Easter Sunday and many people here in Rome take the opportunity to leave the city for a day trip. Often, friends would get together for a picnic and take advantage of the arrival of Spring. People always hope for good weather but as this winter has been colder than usual (remember, it snowed in Rome), we were fortunate enough to get only a few short showers.
As I am sick at the moment, I was definitely not up for a whole day out. However, I still wanted to go out for a few hours and so we decided just to go to a seaside town of Ostia for a walk. It is about an hour from Rome. On the way to the highway, we saw there was a long line of traffic going towards the sea and I decided, I didn’t want to take the risk of being stuck in traffic for hours. It might not have been the case but I didn’t want to take that chance.
Lake in Eur
So the alternative was to go for a walk near the lake (laghetto) in Eur. It’s a beautiful place and very well maintained. There were many people there – some jogging, walking their dog and as there are many playgrounds around the park, it was swamped with parents and children. There’s actually a very good ice cream shop here called Giolitti and it’s the branch of the one that is in Rome center.

Parking was actually easy to find and after a few minutes of walking around, we bumped into friends whom we haven’t seen in ages. Well, you could say we killed two birds with one stone. We spent two hours there catching up with our friends and just enjoying the outdoors. At one point, there was light rain for about 10 minutes but then the sun came out again. It was a good call to go to the lake instead of going to the sea and by lunch time, we were home.
If you are in Rome and would like to visit the lake, you can get there with the Metro. Take Linea B towards Laurentina and get off at the Eur Fermi stop. It’s a different side of Rome and one where you won’t see a lot of tourists!
